This is such an important question. This week I posed this question in some online groups and got an overwhelming response. Clearly, I was not the only one in some serious need of some FUN.
So I thought this would be a great way to talk about FUN, what it means, and how to engage in fun activities on a more regular basis. Also, I decided to talk about it some more, pose some questions and ask you about what you do for fun!
This all came about because most recently I had a conversation with another coach and she asked me, “What do you do for fun?” Immediately, I thought “I love to read”. Then she asked “What do you read?”, to which I replied “personal development books and business books”. Clearly, this was an A-ha moment as I had no idea that I was lacking “fun” in my life, but because I’ve been so focused maybe I need to adjust my idea of fun. Also, I was a bit stumped by this initial question because there is not any one specific thing that I do everyday that is “fun”, or that I consider fun. I enjoy my work and running my business, helping and serving others, so could this be fun? She wasn’t buying it. I thought some more.
I was brought to a place of new awareness. I had a realization that I do what I need to do for my business and I enjoy working with my amazing clients and that this fulfills me in so many ways, but clearly this was not a recreational type “fun” that I was being asked about. As I thought more about “fun”, I realized that I am taking care of myself (exercise, eating healthy, meditation, getting centered and balanced, etc.), continuing education for personal development, and taking care of my family. I thought to myself that this was clearly not a self-care issue because I am taking care of myself. But fun? Hmm.. I had to think about this more.
Sure we travel throughout the year – this is fun. I spend time with my family – this is fun. But what is fun just for me?? It has been a while since I have really thought about the meaning of fun and what that means for me. Then I realized I have been caught up in the day-to-day activities of being a mom and wife, business owner, grad student, and coach. I had realized that fun had been lost from my vocabulary and from my daily life.
I like to go for walks, watch movies, and write in my journal – but is this considered fun? Clearly, I was doing some deep investigation of what I have been doing in my daily life and whether I think this is fun.
When I asked this question to others I got some great replies that included – dancing, bubble baths, getting massages and having spa days, taking yoga classes & zumba classes, pole-dance classes, reading, watching movies, watching favorite TV shows, creating art, cross-stitching, sewing, and traveling. Even the suggestion of having great sex came up and was a response that was repeated a few times. These were some great ideas! Now I knew how other people were having fun, but what about me? I was still doing some soul searching.
Eventually I came up with a list of things that I like to do for fun and have started making an action plan for fun. I’ve even planned a weekend getaway. How’s that for putting FUN into action?
I’m also scheduling some lunch and dinner dates with some girlfriends, and plan to do at least one FUN thing daily just for me!
So what about you? What do you do for fun daily? Clearly I had an epiphany that I was not having enough fun and realized I have been on autopilot with my day to day for a while. Are you on autopilot too? What can you to to think outside the box and do more fun things in your life?
I’ve put together some questions to get you thinking about what you are currently doing for fun and about adding more fun into your life. This might help you get an a-ha moment as well and get you moving on having more FUN!
What do you do for fun? What makes you happy? What do you do in your down time?
What can do every day that is fun for you?
Make a list of all the fun things that you like to do. What can you take action on today to have more fun?
How can you incorporate fun things into your day, week, or month?
