The First Step to Goal Setting – Getting Clarity On What You Want
We all want to live a happy and fulfilled life. Achieving what we want in life – whether it is succeeding in your profession, earning money, finding your life partner or following your passion – is possible only when we know what we want. The first step, therefore, to achieving our dreams and goals is to know what they are. Knowing is not guessing or speculating. It is having clarity – when you know, you know. You don’t think or guess. There are no doubts about it.
There comes a point in our life when we are confused about what we want in life. It could be because you have too many ideas or thoughts in your mind about how to live your life. Or it could be because there are a number of things you want to accomplish, but do not know where to start. To gain clarity, you need to eliminate the confusion. And here is how you do that.
When in doubt, ask. Asking questions is one of the most effective ways to find direction in life. When you need to gain clarity about your goals, ask yourself –
* Who do you want to be?
* Where do you want to be?
* What and who do you want in your life?
Now these questions are for you. Because only your own realization over a period of time, during life circumstances can help you gain clarity. Nobody else can.
Understanding your past
Often, people get stuck in life and are unable to move ahead into the future, because they dwell too much on the past. Without a doubt, your past has a significant influence on who you are today. That is why it is important to understand it. Understanding your past gives you clarity about what you want in the future. And once you do understand, move on.
Visualize your future
Visualization is an effective technique that can help you realize your dreams. Take time every day to sit silently and meditate. Close your eye, and visualize where, how and with who you want to be a year, five or ten years from now. Visual imagery helps you gain better clarity than thoughts do. Be careful not to get carried away during visualization; it is important to stick to practicality.
Write your goals
With the help of visualization, make a list of all the things you want. Write them down in as much detail as possible, to be clear about what exactly you are aiming for. Explain your goals and set a time to achieve them, and why you want to achieve them within the time frame. This will help you chalk out a plan for reaching your goals. In this manner, list down as many goals as you can.
The final step to gain clarity about what you want in life is prioritizing. Take the list of your goals and prioritize them as per your requirements. In this process, you may realize that you may not want certain things after all – strike out what you don’t want. Create a fresh list in terms of priority and start planning on how to achieve them.
Now take these steps and write down what you want, then start working towards it.
Actionable: Where do you want to be a year from now? How can you start getting there today? Don’t just think about it, start doing it! Use this as an opportunity to journal about where you want to go, and then list some action steps you can take right now to get to where you want to be.
