In a nutshell, excuses are a way that the ego keeps you from achieving your biggest dreams. When you use excuses, you are finding reasons why NOT to do things that may seem scary or outside of your comfort zone.
However, when you choose to reach outside your comfort zone you override your ego and start working from a place of personal power. In the long run these activities are really beneficial and can become very pleasurable once the negative-self talk is eliminated. Basically, you need to change your excuse”I CAN’T” or “I WON’T” into an “I CAN” and “I WILL” and then follow through with action.
- Excuse: I can’t finish school because I have a baby and I can’t afford day care.
- Personal Power: There are online and evening programs and tons of options to fund your education.
- Excuse: I can’t workout (or go to the gym) because I don’t have time to go, or I don’t have the money to afford a gym.
- Personal Power: I’ll walk around my neighborhood and I’ll fit it into my schedule early in the morning or after work (or during my lunch break).
- Excuse: I’ll do it tomorrow because I’m tired, sad, it’s uncomfortable, I’d rather watch TV, surf the net, etc. or any other excuse (procrastination).
- Personal Power: I will finish this now, so I won’t have to do it tomorrow.
- Excuse: I’m not good enough so I won’t try.
- Personal Power: I am all that I need. I’ll take the chance on myself.
What are your excuses and how can you delve into your packet of personal power to rectify it? Day in and day out people run their lives on excuses and look back and wonder, “What happened to me? How did I get here? This isn’t what I had planned for my life!” Of course not! No one plans to run around in circles, it just happens. However, it happens because you listen to your own negative self-talk. It happens because the pleasurable thing to do is to let things go, eat the cookie, avoid the gym, or procrastinate the tasks for later. This is pleasurable in the NOW. However, when tomorrow comes, and when your health declines and your cookies are gone (and on your waist/hips) and the weight is up, there is something you could have done to prevent it. That something is called your personal power. Everyone has their own stash of personal power. No one can take it from you and the only way to make more of it is to believe in yourself and change your thoughts.
What we think about most becomes who we are in the long run. So take a moment and think about what you “think” about most. Where do you put your energies, and what excuses do you make in your life? It’s time to let go of the excuses and grab hold of your power. The power is within you and starting today you can say NO to the excuses and YES to your power.
Think of things you want to accomplish in your life. It can be anything. Here are some
1. Get a better job.
2. Get a promotion in current job.
3. Drink more water.
4. Eat more fruits and veggies.
5. Exercise more.
6. Buy a house.
7. Get married.
8. Find a partner.
9. Etc., etc. -And the list goes on.
So list what you want out of life and then list what your obstacles are. List the excuses that you tell yourself, or that you believe about yourself, and then reverse them. Instead of telling yourself something is “difficult” or going to be difficult, tell yourself it will be easy. Then believe it!
Reverse the excuses. What can make those dreams real? What can you do to make those achievements happen? On a day-to-day basis, what can you commit to so that you can achieve those goals? Daily thoughts become daily actions, which turn into daily habits, which in turn contributes to your daily lifestyle and before you know it, this becomes your destiny. It becomes your future. No successful person started big, unless they had a big inheritance, but I digress.
The point is that in order to obtain long-term achievement, today is the focus. It all begins with today. Focusing on yesterday will only bring back negative thinking and negative self-talk, and focusing on tomorrow will get you lost in a world that doesn’t yet exist in time. Focusing on today, however, gives you power. You have the opportunity to change things today. Your thoughts, your actions starting today pave the way for your
future and by limiting your excuses today you can activate your power and achieve success with whatever you set your mind to do.
All you have is today. Make today great and make today the best by taking back your power and saying NO to excuses.
